Joshi, Rao go down fighting

Manoj Joshi and Srinivas Rao may have lost their quarterfinal match, but they won the respect and admiration of all their fellow players in the Men's Doubles event at the Rising Star Open Tennis Tournament played at the Fergusson College courts on Saturday with a display of some excellent tennis and an ability that belied their age.Joshi and Rao, the only players in the draw who were aged above 45, pulled off a surprise victory over Nitin Sawant and Anil Kshirsagar in the first round, edging out their opponents 6-5.The duo then beat the team of Dutta Dongre and Vishal Jadhav convincingly, winning 6-1 to enter the quarterfinals.In the quarterfinals, Joshi and Rao put up a spirited fight against Babu and Gopal Jadhav before finally losing 6-4. However, they were lauded by all the younger players for their determined performance, said a press note issued here.The Jadhavs were joined in the Men's Doubles semifinals by the team of Pandurang and Sumit, who beat Prashant Ogale and Prathamesh Kulkarni 6-4. Sandeep and Sachin also entered the semifinals with another 6-4 victory over Sivram S.D. and Krishna Karthik.The pair of Amit Shingare and Ganesh Devkhile completed the semifinal lineup, overcoming their opponents Santosh Khurade and Arjun Waghmare 6-5 in a close match.The Under-14 Girls' pre-quarterfinals, also played yesterday, saw a series of one-sided victories, with Vaibhavi Kachawa, Tejal Shrotriya, Nehal Patankar and Suprabha Pujari all entering the quarterfinals with identical 6-0 wins.Kachawa beat Tanvi Gugale, while Shrotriya overcame Payal Gaikwad convincingly.
