Manipur thump Tamil Nadu 8-0

Kolkata, Jun 16 (PTI) Manipur walloped Tamil Nadu 8-0 to cruise into the quarterfinal league stage of Junior National Football Championship for Dr B C Roy Trophy at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today. B Thanglaawam and G G Taboi scored two goals each, while Dayanand Singh, Bishorjit Singh, Jockey Singh and Sushil Metei netted one each during the match. Meanwhile, in the last set of preliminary matches, Madhya Pradesh thrashed Himachal Pradesh 6-1, while Manipur emerged cluster VI toppers to make the cut. MP scored through Ashirbad Dabodia (two goals), Mahendra Chauhan (two), Ashish Silavat and Munnalal in their inconsequential cluster VI match. Himachal Pradesh reduced the margin through a solitary strike by Tarun. Meghalaya also advanced into the quarterfinal after finishing best among the runner-up thus completing the final eight line-up. For the quarterfinal league, which will be held over the next six days, the eight teams have been divided into two groups of four. Top two sides of each group will make the semifinal. Last year, Karnataka won the title while Orissa were the runner-up. The semis will be held on June 24 and 25 with the summit clash on June 27. Quarterfinal league grouping: Group A: Karnataka, Goa, Uttarakhand and Meghalaya. Group B: Bengal, Orissa, Manipur and Chandigarh.
