Mumbai, May 5 -- After bearing the brunt of the motormen's strike on Monday evening, many office-goers thought it wiser to stay home on Tuesday. Though only 25 per cent staff reported to work at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Tuesday, it did not affect trading, the spokesperson said. "Having anticipated trouble, the essential staff had stayed back on Monday and normal functions of BSE did not get affected," said a senior official of the exchange on condition of anonymity. "But the offline services were hit." Nationalised banks, such as State Bank of India, and corporate firms, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tata Motors and Reliance Industries, too registered low attendance. HDFC Bank witnessed around 60 per cent employee turnout. "We asked our employees to leave early as we were not aware of how the situation would turn out," the spokesperson said. ICICI Bank staff too reported to work, though late. "Those who took alternative transports, such as taxi, reached office on time, but those who travelled by bus and train reached late," said Saurav Singh, general manager, HR, of ICICI Bank. Seema Pitale, deputy manager of the State Bank of India branch in Fort, had a tough time reaching her Thane home on Monday. "After waiting for a Kalyan-bound train at CST to start for 45 minutes. I finally got off and went to the long distance train platform, hopped on an Amravati passenger train and reached home," she said. Pitale said only 15 per cent of the staff at her branch reported to work on Tuesday. Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Securities Ltd saw an almost 100 per cent employee turnout. "Despite the tough time our employees had reaching home on Monday, they were in office today," said Motilal Oswal, chairman and managing director of Motilal Oswal Securities.
