Under pressure to hold its more than 50% market share in the 1.5 million annual passenger car segment characterised by cut-throat competition, the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India would look to double its production capacity to two million units in the next five to six years. With Ford, Volkswagen and General Motors also looking to tap the 1.2-million-cars-per-year in the A2 segment, Maruti's market share could come under severe pressure. Currently, more than 70% sales in the auto sector come from the small car segment. In the next 12 months Toyota, Honda and Nissan are also going to bring in small cars for the Indian market which may put added pressure on Maruti, experts said.Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India RC Bhargava told FE that the company would grow on the lines of the domestic economy and since the auto market is set to double in the next five years the company would also look to increase production two-fold. "We are going to keep pace with the economy...over a period of 5-6 years my sense is that the auto market would double. Even Maruti would double its production to keep its market share intact," he said.According to analysts Maruti is best positioned to increase production in India due to its record sales in 2009-10. During the year the company sold more than one million cars, the first by any Indian car company. In April 2010, the company sold 68,668 units, leagues ahead of its closest rival Hyundai Motor India which sold 28,501 units. In the last one-year India has been home to several car launches. In January-March period General Motors India launched Beat, Ford India entered the small car segment with its Figo and the much-awaited Polo was launched by Volkswagen.
