The phone of Deepak Sharma who taught Suresh Raina the finer points of the game at Sports College, Lucknow has been ringing ever since his trainee has been named captain of Team India for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The first call which broke the news to Sharma was from Raina's elder brother Dinesh. Though the College trainees are missing due to summer vacations, majority of them either sent congratulatory messages to Sharma or conveyed the same through phone."Raina might have passed out of the College long ago, but both Raina and the College students share an emotional bond with each other as he makes it a point to visit the College for practice whenever he gets an opportunity. ," explains Sharma."Raina may belong to Ghaziabad but his roots as a cricketer are here. Due to his attachment with the College, perhaps he is even thinking in terms of buying a house in Gomti Nagar in Lucknow", Sharma confided.Talking about Raina donning the mantle of Team India skipper, Sharma said, " It was my dream but I had not thought of it becoming a reality so soon. Though he may be leading a second-string team but it just shows that the selectors are considering him as a future asset for Indian team's captaincy. Raina's role as a captain of the Chennai Super Kings when Dhoni got injured during the recently concluded IPL and his impressive century in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup must have helped him attain this milestone.""When he was a student of this College, I used to make him captain of the senior team comprising mostly of the Class XII boys even though he was in Class XI then and of course, he used to lead the junior team when he was in Class X."Sharma felt that though his trainees Raina and RP Singh might have gifted a car to him as a token of thanks as they put it, however, Raina being named captain of the Indian team is the real Guru-Dakshina.
