Panaji, Jun 20 (PTI) Industry veteran Jamshyd N Godrej has said that there should be significant increase in cess imposed on mining and revenue earned through it should be pumped back into welfare of people residing in mining belt. "Local community will not allow mining project if it is not beneficial to them. We have seen in Orissa what has happened," Godrej commented talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function yesterday. "I feel that mining cess should be increased significantly and that money should go to the areas where extraction takes place. It should be invested in education, health care and related sectors," Godrej, the Chairman and Managing Director of Godrej & Boycee Manufacturing company, said. "Everything should be done in a transparent way. How will government decide in which area there should be a mine? All the stakeholders including local population must be involved in the decision making," he said. Sharing a view point on Goa scenario, former president of World Wide Fund for Nature-India said that whatever state does, it should be in a sustainable way. Responding to a question, Godrej said that lot of places in world do mining in a sustainable way. Godrej said that tourism is best industry for Goa. "But for the (tourism) industry to work, you need good infrastructure and it should be an affordable place," the CMD added. "There are some places in the world like Balli where the cost of visiting is very reasonable. They are well organised as a tourism destination," he explained.
