Kolkata, May 17 (PTI) Drawing attention to the plight of draught horses, actor Nargise Bagheri has stripped down Lady Godivastyle for a stunning new campaign by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. The actress who debuted opposite Akshay Kumar in ''Garam Masala'' covered her modesty with long hair for the campaign with the caption "Don''t Get Taken for a Ride, Horse-Drawn Carts Are Cruel." "Horse carts are cruel and outdated and should be relegated to the history books . in the city, the mix of horses and traffic can make for a lethal combination for horses and passengers," said a PETA release quoting Bagheri. In the released images the actress rides the dark horse naked, much like Lady Godiva, wife of an earl under Danish King Canute, who according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry. PETA said its investigators in Mumbai documented that horses used to pull carts were beaten and whipped to force them to work beyond a point of exhaustion. The horses were fed unhealthy food and given dirty drinking water with stables being often damp, filthy and infested with flies because of accumulated dung and urine. It also said that the horses for horse-drawn carriages that ferried visitors around Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata were in pathetic condition. PETA said its supporters such as actors John Abraham and Hema Malini contacted Mumbai officials urging them to banish horse-drawn carts from city streets. Stating that a ban was implemented by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi this month, PETA said it has also written to authorities in Delhi calling for a horse-cart ban there as well. PETA was aiming at a similar ban in Kolkata in order to give respite to suffering horses.
