Srinagar, May 17 (PTI) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today asked young medicos to see beyond the cities and towns and make their services available to over 70 per cent population living in rural and remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir. "They (People in rural ares) are in dire need of your service and you can render it easily when you are young and single," he said inaugurating a state-of-the-art auditorium at Srinagar Dental College here. Noting that upgradation of dental colleges in the state was high on his government''s agenda, he said, "We want to convert these into reputed schools of learning which produce doctors and surgeons par-excellence." Claiming that the government is spending a lot of money on doctors, he said the medical fraternity must have a sense of responsibility towards the society. The Chief Minister directed the Health and Medical Education Department to fill the vacancies for teachers in the two dental colleges in the next six months and promised to speed up work on infrastructure development on the campus. Addressing a Pahari conference at Rajouri about 170 kms from Jammu, Omar reiterated his government''s commitment to equitable development of all areas and sections of society, and warned people against elements out to drive a wedge among them. "We are determined to reach out to all areas and people in the state for their socio-economic betterment on equitable lines," he said. He said the state government is vigorously pursuing with the Centre the issue of allocation of ST status to Pahari speaking people but made it clear that it will not be done at the cost of Gujjar and Bakerwal Communities. "While making efforts to seek ST status for Pahari speaking people government is committed to safeguard the interests of Gujjars and Bakerwals," he said.
