On Pak, Krishna walks cautious line

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Ever since the Sharm-el-Sheikh fallout, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has been far too cautious and a little nervous in his dealings with Pakistan given the kind of domestic ramifications one misstep can have. While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been taking the risks, Krishna has always sought to downplay his role. The latest example being implementing the Thimphu decision that foreign ministers of both countries should meet to take matters forward — Krishna seemed to postpone a discussion on this with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Thimphu itself, telling his advisers that it could be done over the phone after some internal discussions. On his return, he is said to have conveyed through official channels to Pakistan that he would rather wait for the Parliament session to be over. Soon after, Islamabad was intent on making the call on Friday or Saturday but Krishna apparently said he was going to be away for the weekend. So now it is slated for Tuesday, but the minister will take a final decision on Monday.
