Orissa is going to announce its action plan on climate change in June."Keeping in mind that the climate change and rise in temperatures have posed a serious threat, Orissa is all set to put in place an action plan on climate change some time next month," state public relations secretary, PK Jena, said. According to him, the state government is currently giving final touches to a draft action plan prepared with help from World Bank and DFID. Leading climate change advisory firm CTRAN has been engaged as the knowledge partners in the exercise, Jena added.Chairing the stakeholder consultation workshop on State Climate Change Plan last week, Jena, who is also doubling as the state energy secretary, said utmost importance will be given to technological upgradation in thermal power plants converting them from sub-critical to super critical technology based plants. Also the use of washed coal will be more environment friendly, he assured. On the other hand ample emphasis is being given on the renewable energy sector and developing small and mid-level hydel projects. Plans have also been put in place to minimise the energy loss at transmission and distribution which is 40% currently. The government aims to limit it to 10% which would save more than 1000 mw electricity for the state, Jena said.
