Ownership of river water vest in states where they actually

flow: Badal Ratwara Sahib (Punjab), Jun 17 (PTI) In continuing war of words over royalty for river water-sharing with Haryana, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said worldwide riparian principles have established that ownership of river waters vested in those states or areas where the rivers actually flow. "Water is a natural resource for Punjab like other states Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand which have coal mines. Rajasthan has abundant source of marble and several others states have iron ores and are charging royalty for mining these natural resources," he told reporters here. Badal said "if these states are permitted to charge royalty for mining of their natural resources, then why Punjab is being denied its right to royalty in case of water for which the state has been actually mining it for past several years for the sake of producing foodgrains for the entire country." He rejected the plea of his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda on the issue saying "it would be better for him to react to this issue objectively after giving due consideration rather issuing vague statements undermining the interests of an agrarian state like Punjab."
