Police close case, wife cries foul

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Mumbai, May 10 -- Almost two years after her husband died following an apparent suicide bid, a woman from Uttar Pradesh has sought a fresh investigation into the death, alleging it was murder. Nirmala Devi, from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, has alleged her husband Vinod Trivedi, a Parel resident, was murdered and the case made to look like suicide. On August 15, 2008, Vinod was rushed to KEM Hospital after he fell unconscious after dinner. He didn't regain consciousness and died on August 27. Bhoiwada police registered it as accidental death. His older brother Gopal, on September 13, gave police a suicide note he claimed was found in the house on September 8. The note was dated August 16, a day after Vinod had taken ill, and it had said that Vinod was tired of life and had named his older brother as his heir. Vinod's wife has alleged the note was fake and pointed the fingers at his older brother and sister-in-law. Vinod owned a shop and a small house in Parel, valued at around Rs 60 lakh. Hindustan Times has a copy of the inquest report and the 'suicide note'. The inquest report says Vinod died of "massive bilateral broncho-pneumonia and cerebral oedema in a clinically alleged case of organo phosphorous compound poisoning". Despite this, the police closed the case. Their closure report has no date on it. Vinod, who ran a small business in Parel, was born in Mumbai, and had married Nirmala in 2001. Nirmala did not know the case has been closed. "I'm scared of coming to Mumbai as I fear for my life," she said, adding that the police keep telling her the case is under investigation. "How could he kill himself? That same day, he called me and said he was coming to pick me up," Nirmala said. Nirmala said she had gone back to her parents a few days before the incident due to ill treatment by her in-laws. Bhoiwada police's Sub Inspector Jaganath Landge, who filed the closure report, said: "Further enquiry will happen".The older brother, Gopal could not be contacted.
