Mumbai, May 16 (PTI) Residents of Annabhav Shate Nagar Chawl in suburban Chembur are carrying out a peaceful protest since the past four days over demolition of over 500 houses in the area. The protesters, led by social activist Medha Patkar, are demanding alternative arrangement. "The houses of these people have been demolished without any notice and warrant. No proper process was followed while evicting them," Patkar alleged. As many as 500 houses have been demolished and 100 houses burnt by the district administration, she alleged. The appeal regarding alternative arrangement for urban poor is pending before the Maharashtra Slum Improvement Board. With the Board yet to decide, how can the authorities demolish their houses, she said.
