Queen``s Baton Relay to arrive in Kerala on August 26

Thiruvananthapuram, May 17 (PTI) The Queen''s Baton Relay (QBR) will arrive in Kerala on August 26 as part of the 19th edition of Commonwealth Games (CWG) which is to be held in New Delhi on October 3-14. The relay will travel through Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode covering around 440 km and exit the state by August 30 in its four-day schedule, the Organising Committee Secretariate officials said here at a press meet. "After its international journey, the QBR will enter India on June 25 from Pakistan at the Wagah border. The baton will go through all states and Union Territories of the country," said Lt General Raj Kadyan, Additional Director General of Ceremonies and QRB. After covering Tamil Nadu, QBR will enter Kerala. Apart from a device to promote the CWG, the relay would be an occassion for each state to project their tourism potential and cultural varieties to the world, he said. Launched by the Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on October 29 in the presence of President Pratibha Patil, the baton was scheduled to cover 1,90,000 km across the world and travel through all 71 Commonweatlth nations. Kadyan said the relay would connect with over one third of the world population in its 340 days journey. It has already covered Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Americas and Oceania and is traveling through New Zealand now. The relay, with the specially designed baton having soil collected from different parts of India, would take hundred days to cover 20,000 km across the nation. Different modes of transport including road and aerial modes would be used according to the accessibility to places. "Sports idols and luminaries of each state will receive the baton in their home states. The selection of those who receive the baton is upto state governments," Kadyan said adding that this would be the longest domestic journey of the QBR in the history of Commonwealth Games. The final baton bearer will hand the baton back to Queen Elizabeth or her representative at New Delhi on October 3 during the opening ceremony. Kerala Sports Council expressed happiness on the arrival of QBR to Kerala as the state is celebrating the year 2010 as ''Year of Sports''.
