Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Power on Thursday said it had started commercial generation from the 300-mw second unit of the Rosa power plant in Uttar Pradesh. The developer began power supply from the first unit on December 28."The second unit of the Rosa power project was successfully synchronised to the UP state grid on June 15," the company said in a statement.Rosa is the first private thermal power plant to be set up in the state which is facing peak power shortfall of 22-23%, or 4,000 mw. The entire 600 mw power from the fist phase will be supplied to the state.Reliance is adding another 600 mw in the second phase, of which 300 mw will be state's share while the rest is to be marketed by the developer as merchant power. The bulk of the power generated by the plant will be consumed in nearby districts. That means relatively low power transmission cost for the project. The Rosa power project was originally envisaged for implementation by the Aditya Birla Group in 1994. However, the project was in limbo until it was taken over by Reliance Power in November 2006. The project site is located near the junction of the Delhi-Lucknow national highway and the Hardoi Road, which is 350 km from Delhi.Reliance Power has project portfolio to develop 33,000 mw power generation capacity with an estimated investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore. It has bagged three out of the four ultra mega power projects bid out by the government so far. However, it has so far commissioned only 600 mw capacity But meanwhile, the company has expedited implementation work on under-construction power projects and expects to have a significant power generation capacity in operation by the end of the current plan.
