Rae Bareli, May 17 (PTI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi today stopped her motorcrade to listen to protests from the people of her Lok Sabha constituency against acute power crisis and shortage of potable water and their plea for her assistance to overcome the two problems. As Gandhi paid unscheduled visits to different parts of her constituency on the first day of her three-day visit, a group of 20-odd people waiting for her on Saraini-Dalmau road raised slogans against the power department to draw her attaintion towards the power crisis they faced. The people, who carried placards reading "Sonia Gandhi zindabad", raised slogans to greet her and as her cavalcade stopped there for a while, they apprised her of the power scenario, to which she promptly directed the SDM accompanying her to look into the problem. Residents of Pureballi ka purwa, Bhairampur and Behta Klan villages, where she paid unscheduled visits, complained about contamination of the waters of Loan river due to effluents being discharged by tanneries in neighbouring Unnao district. The villagers also complained that handpumps were drying up and the road, whose construction had started ten years back, was yet to take a shape.
