News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, May 9 -- Thankfully they don't sit on the train's roof or sell tokens in black, but spitting is a habit Delhiites just can't seem to get rid of, while travelling in the Metro. Data collected by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) over the past year and a half, reveals that spitting in the Metro tops the list of offences that commuters have been charged for, with the number of offenders twice as much as for any other offence. While at it, DMRC also collected Rs 10.5 lakh in fine from 5256 passengers since November 2008. "Most cases are of spitting and defacing the property. People leave paan stains on the station walls and corners," says Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, DMRC. Drunkenness and sitting on the floor figure among other common offences, while refusing to vacate seats for women, playing loud music and quarrelling also make it to the list. Among offences that are in the, list but no one ever has been booked for them is travelling on the train's roof. "The maximum fines were levied at New Delhi, Chandni Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Uttam Nagar and Janakpuri stations," says Dayal. Delhiites recall their fair share of encounters with 'Metro offenders'. "I once saw a commuter being fined for smoking in the train. The officials came and looked for him in every bogey, and although he tried to hide, they caught him and took away," says Rip Saikia, an artist. Some commuters, have been lucky. "I was clicking pictures. They warned me and gave me a long lecture but thankfully, did not fine," says Shalu, a DU student.
