Surprise packages Denmark stun U.S. 2-1

Denmark became the first team to reach the world championship second round after sinking favourites United States 2-1 with an overtime goal in Cologne on Monday.Denmark, who also caused an upset in their first Group D game by beating Finland 4-1, grabbed the winner through defenseman Stefan Lassen 2:04 into overtime.It was the second consecutive defeat for the Americans who lost 2-1 in overtime to the Germans in their opening match.Lassen flicked a wrist shot, hitting netminder Scott Clemmensen, before scoring on the rebound to seal qualification."This is the best Danish team ever," NHL player Peter Regin told reporters.The U.S., who have only one player in their squad from the silver medal-winning Vancouver Olympics team because of the ongoing NHL playoffs, must win their final match against the Finns to avoid going into the relegation round in the 16-team tournament."Inexcusable, the U.S. should not be losing these games," said captain Jack Johnson. "At the same time it's hard to win when you score just two goals in two games."Finland veteran Petteri Nummelin was honoured for playing in a record 15th world championship as his team edged past Germany 1-0 to leave the section wide open.The hosts must beat Denmark in their final group match to advance or hope for a Finnish victory over the United States.With three NHL players in their team, the Finns needed a goal from Jarkko Immonen to edge past Germany in front of an 18,000 crowd.Olympic champions Canada crushed Latvia 6-1 to advance after two wins out of two in Group B.(Writing by Karolos Grohmann, editing by Tony Jimenez.
