Tinplate Company of India Ltd (TCIL), a Tata Steel associate company in which the steel major currently has a 45% stake, is exploring among other things, with Corus' tinplate making facilities in Europe, possibilities of servicing jointly some global accounts."We have been working together for the last few years in two-three areas. In operations, we are sharing and improving on the best practices at facilities both here and in Europe," said Tarun Daga, managing director, TCIL. The two entities were also taking steps to collaborate in servicing some global accounts.TCIL would thus be working together with Corus' tinplate units in Europe towards promoting tinplate in India and selling TCIL's own tinplate overseas to big accounts like Crown Holdings, the multinational into beverage can making.Compared to TCIL which has a tinplate making capacity of 3.8 lakh tonne per annum (ltpa), Corus (now Tata Steel UK), which was taken over by Tata Steel in early 2007 has tinplate making capacity between 12 ltpa and 15 ltpa, located at its plants in the UK and Holland."We are trying to work with them to sell our own (TCIL) tinplate in the international market to clients like Crown Holdings while on the technology front we are working to bring their knowledge and technology in promoting tinplate in the country," said a senior TCIL marketing personnel.TCIL would also be getting technology from Corus for making high quality tinplate beverage cans in India for the domestic beverage industry. In case TCIL succeeds with Corus in promoting usage of more tinplate in the country, global can-making players like Crown Holdings could in the future, looking at the demand, think of putting up units in India too, said a TCIL source.TCIL, according to Daga, was also jointly doing research with Corus in the area of tinplate development."Some international-level research work is also being done (in Europe) in collaboration with them (Corus); while some work is being done here, some others are being done there (in Europe)," said the TCIL managing director.Daga said, working together with Corus, TCIL had last year upgraded its facilities here and obtained ISO 22000, a food safety certification, which would help TCIL in the future in selling more tinplate in the country. Around 70% of the tinplate that the company produces is sold to the food processing industry after being transformed into cans.
