Three-member committee to probe New Delhi Railway Station mishap

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): A day after the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station that claimed two lives and left 15 others injured, Ministry of Railways has formed a high-level inquiry committee to probe into the mishap.According to Anil Saxena, Railway Board spokesperson a high-level committee has been set up on the behest of the Railway Minister."On the order of Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Railway Board, the Railways Ministry has announced to form a three-member high-level committee. The committee will start working from today itself."The three-member committee comprises of Additional Member, Commercial of Railway Board Brajmohan; Additional Member, Civil Engineering of Railway Board S K Malik and Additional Director General of Railway Protection Force (Northern Railways) P K Mehta.The inquiry committee would probe and present its report at the earliest."Now that a high level committee is formed, it will probe into the matter and present a report. Inputs would be used from the previous committee if they have some," added Saxena.The stampede occurred at around 2.50 in the afternoon on Sunday (May 16) on platform number 12 of the New Delhi Railway Station.The incident happened when hundreds of passengers, waiting for a train going to Bihar state had to rush to another platform following a last-minute announcement.Among the dead were a 12-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman.The Railway Minister announced cash compensation of rupees 200,000 for the kin of victims who died in the incident and rupees 50,000 for the injured.In 2004, five people were killed in a similar stampede at the same station.
