Farmers bringing their produce to mandis across the country will now get a chance to see prices in other mandis on ticker boards. The move will help them making informed sale decisions. The mandis can now also watch the future prices of commodities being traded in the commexes.Earlier only traders or brokers registered with commodity exchanges could access these data through dedicated terminals.Under the "price dissemination project"—jointly initiated by department of consumer affairs through FMC and national commodity exchanges such as Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Ltd (NCDEX)—all the market place will be equipped with ticker boards so that farmers can track prices trend of various commodities. "The efficiency of India's commodity markets can be bolstered by providing a level-playing field for all stakeholders ranging from primary producers to end-consumers," Lamon Rutten, MD&CEO, MCX told FE.Echoing similar views, Rajesh Mishra, CEO of NMCE said, "Farmers will get spot and futures prices without any fees, which would lead to better price realisation for the agriculture producers."The price dissemination project being implemented during the 11th Plan, 65% of the funding for setting up of the ticker board which would display prices of commodity prices is being done by FMC and while the rest is being invested by commodity exchanges. The price of each board is estimate to be around Rs 80,000, while the local market committee would ensure power supply and maintenance of the boards."These boards will provide credible price discovery mechanism for the farmers," a senior NCDEX official told FE. As many as 180 ticker boards have already been instaled in various markets located states, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand during 2009-10. FMC had asked MCX, NMCE and NCDEX to set up 60 such ticker boards each during last fiscal.Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar will formally launch the "price dissemination project" in the Asia's biggest vegetable market at Azadpur in Delhi on Wednesday.
