Top HNLC insurgent nabbed along Bangla border

Shillong, May 8 (PTI) A top leader of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), suspected to be involved in several cases of extortion and murder, has been apprehended by BSF. Self-styled sergeant major of HNLC Pariston Pakyntein was arrested near Dawki along the Indo-Bangla border and handed over to Meghalaya Police last night, a senior police officer said. He was today produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate''s court and remanded in six days of police custody. A resident of Mawlai here, Pakyntein was apprehended after he along with some other cadre of the group had crossed over to India from Bangladesh to carry out extortion activities in the coal belt areas. Pakyntein is believed to have been involved in the killing of Raja Khongsit, a businessman of Pamsutia, last December besides a number of extortion cases.
