Uneasy calm at Posco site as protesters dig up approach roads

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

An uneasy calm prevailed in the proposed Posco site in Orissa's Jagatsingpur district with villagers digging up approach roads, just like Maoists had done in West Bengal's Lalgarh area. Although no fresh incidents have been reported since the police action against anti-Posco groups on Saturday, the tension is palpable as villagers prepare for a showdown."We are organising villagers for the battle against the police and the district administration," said the Posco Pratirodho Sangram Samiti (PPSS) chief, Abhaya Shoo. He said guards had been reinforced at village gates round-the-clock.Meanwhile, activists of the PPSS, the CPI-backed organisation which is spearheading the agitation against Posco's 12 mt steel project in Orissa, have dug all the roads leading to the three gram panchyats—Dhinkia, Nuagoan and Gobindpur-thereafter making the core area of the project inaccessible for vehicles. On Saturday, the police took control of the Balitutha area where the PPSS had put up the first gate to the site. After capturing Balitutha, the police has set up a permanent post there, keeping vigil on the movement of people."The Saturday action was to clear the road blockage put up by the villagers," said Jagatsinghpur district police chief, SS Deba Dutta Singh. He said the police action was required to maintain law and order in the area. Singh also indicated that the police is searching for some villagers against whom the court warrants have to be executed. It is expected that the police may move into the villages in the next few days. The police has also beefed up security around the Posco site. The opposition political parties and the anti-displacement forces have lined up a series of agitations. A five-member BJP parliamentary party led by Nishikanta Patel Sunday visited Dhinkia village to get a first-hand report. Six organisation including CPI (ML) has given a state-wide agitation call on May 20 and 21, while six non-Congress and non-BJP political parties including the Left parties have announced a state-wide road blockage agitation on May 21.
