U.S. Open to return to Pebble Beach in 2019

The U.S. Golf Association intends to bring the U.S. Open back to Pebble Beach in 2019 to mark the club's 100th anniversary, the United States Golf Association (USGA) said on Wednesday.On the eve of the 110th U.S. Open starting on Thursday, officials told a news conference that a letter of intent had been signed between the parties for the 2019 tournament ahead of a final contract.It would be the sixth U.S. Open to be staged at the scenic Pacific coast course.The USGA said the 2017 U.S. Open would be held at Erin Hills, a public course in Erin, Wisconsin, that opened in 2006."Erin Hills boasts one of the greatest natural inland sites for a golf course that I have ever seen," said Mike Davis, USGA senior director of Rules and Competitions.(Reporting by Larry Fine, Editing by John Mehaffey; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
