New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) In a bid to end the stand-off with members of the Academic Council, Delhi University Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental has invited the agitating teachers for talks. Members of the Academic Council are on a sit-in at the the office of the VC since May 13 against what they call a unilateral imposition of semester-based syllabi in 12 undergraduate courses of the science department. The sit-in started after a special meeting of the AC on Thursday approved the revised syllabi of the courses to be implemented from session 2010-2011. The protesters are demanding that the VC assures them that the decision would be reviewed and not imposed in a hurry and without debate and discussion. Terming the entire episode as "most unfortunate," Pental said he had asked the agitating AC members to meet him tomorrow afternoon. "It is not about the semester or revision of syllabi, its about the larger interest of the students and teachers. I have invited them to meet me at 3.30 pm, though I am yet to get a response from them," Pental told PTI. The AC members, who have been demanding that the VC return to the meeting venue to hold talks them, indicated that they took the development positively. "At least he has agreed to meet us," said Prof J Khuntia, a member of the Academic Council. "We are yet to take a final call on the meeting, but after all we are for dialogue to resolve the issue," he said. Khuntia, however, said the members were unhappy with the Vice Chancellor "bracketing" them with other political groups on the campus. "In his letter to us, he has alleged that we are acting on outside influence, which is not true. We are independent and responsible elected members of the AC and we are pained by this allegation," he said. The agitation had started soon after the Academic Council meeting on May 13 during which, as claimed by AC members, Pental refused a debate on the revised syllabi of 12 courses and got it approved without any discussion. AC members said they want the minutes of the faculty and general body meetings that framed the revised syllabi to be put on record to know who has actually framed the syllabus of the semester courses that was approved that day. The VC, however, said these were "delaying tactics". PTI WAJ.
