New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) Wheat procurement for the 2010-11 marketing year today reached 21.04 million tonnes, down 2.4 per cent over the same period last year. The Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, had purchased 21.54 million tonnes of wheat in the same period last year. Wheat procurement, which was higher by a phenomenal 40 per cent over the previous year on April 13, dipped for the first time on May 3, and has remained lower than last year''s since then. Meanwhile, the government expects wheat procurement in the 2010-11 marketing year (April-March) to exceed last year''s record of 25.30 million tonnes and reach 26.2 million tonnes. However, barring Madhya Pradesh, procurement from all major contributing states such as Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has declined. According to the FCI data, Punjab has contributed the maximum quantity 10.08 lakh tonnes of wheat to the central pool so far this marketing year. Wheat procurement from Uttar Pradesh so far this year has declined by 40 per cent to 10.53 lakh tonnes from 17.51 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period last year. The government procures foodgrains at a minimum support price (MSP) so as to protect farmers from market fluctuations. The MSP for wheat has been fixed at Rs 1,100 per quintal for the 2010-11 marketing season. India''s wheat production was pegged at 80.28 million tonnes in the 2009-10 season, marginally lower than the previous year''s record of 80.68 million tonnes.
