W.House says still seriously concerned on Iran

Washington and its international partners remain seriously concerned about Tehran's nuclear program, but it would be a positive step for Iran to transfer low-enriched uranium off of its soil as it agreed to do in October, the White House said on Monday.Iran agreed with mediators Brazil and Turkey that it would send some uranium abroad, reviving a U.N.-drafted fuel swap plan in an apparent concession over its nuclear program. But Tehran made clear it had no intention of suspending uranium enrichment the West suspects is aimed at making bombs, and Washington joined other big powers in expressing skepticism, as analysts said the move could help it split the international community and avert planned U.N. sanctions."Iran must take the steps necessary to assure the international community that its nuclear program is intended exclusively for peaceful purposes," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement, or face consequences including sanctions.Gibbs acknowledged efforts made by Turkey and Brazil, and said the proposal must "be conveyed clearly and authoritatively" to the International Atomic Energy Agency before it can be considered by the international community."Given Iran's repeated failure to live up to its own commitments, and the need to address fundamental issues related to Iran's nuclear program, the United States and international community continue to have serious concerns," Gibbs said.Tehran agreed at talks with major powers in Geneva in October to move most of its enriched uranium out of the country, but the deal fell apart under political pressure in Iran.Gibbs said Iran's plan to continue its 20 percent enrichment violates U.N. Security Council resolutions, and said the declaration issued in Tehran is vague about whether Iran is willing to meet with major powers over its nuclear program, as it also agreed to do in October.Washington remains committed to a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, he said.(Reporting by Patricia Zengerle, editing by Stacey Joyce)
