Zinc plunges on global cues

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI) Zinc prices fell Rs 0.85, or 0.92 per cent to Rs 91.95 per kg today in futures trade after the metal tumbled to hit a downside limit at Shanghai on euro zone debt woes. Subdued domestic demand also put pressure on the metal prices at futures market here. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, zinc for July contract drifted by Rs 0.85, or 0.92 per cent to Rs 91.95 per kg, with an open interest of 108 lots. The metal for delivery in current-month May contract also fell Rs 0.65, or 0.71 per cent to Rs 90.55 per kg, with an open interest of 6,962 lots. Market analysts said weakness in entire base metals pack in global markets, on concerns that the global economic recovery will wane and demand may fall. Meanwhile, at Shanghai, the metal plunged 835 yuan or 4.97 to hit down slide limit at 15,970 yuan per tonne, while at the London Metal Exchange, it fell USD 35, or 1.70 per cent at USD 2,020 per tonne.
