12 cops suspended in custodial death case

Palakkad (Ker), May 17 (PTI) Twelve policemen, two of them sub-inspectors, accused in the alleged custodial death of a murder case suspect, were placed under suspension tonight. The departmental action was taken by IG (Thrissur) Mohmad Yasin, police said. They were named in the list of accused in the case filed by Superintendent of Police P S Unniraja in the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court here on May 13. The case relates to the death of Sampath, the prime suspect in the murder of a businessman''s wife in the town on March 23. The 47-year-old woman was found murdered with her throat slit and her 70-year-old mother seriously injured at home. Within few days, Sampath and two others were taken into custody from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, but before he was produced before a court, he died, allegedly due to torture in custody. The post-mortem corroborated the allegation of his relatives that he had been a victim of police torture. As the issue sparked strong reactions from political circles, a crime branch probe was ordered and a special investigation team set up. However, no one has been arrested in the case.
