In its concluding arguments before Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) asked the court for permission to begin the trial of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and a co-accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case on Tuesday. The investigating agency said the probe had revealed the riots were supported by a prominent person and members of a particular community were targetted.CBI prosecutor Y K Saxena told the court that Kumar, during the riots, had reportedly asked his supporters how many people were eliminated. Saxena asked the court to let the CBI frame charges against Kumar and others and let the prosecution prove its case.Kumar had earlier made a statement saying the witnesses' accounts showed no consistency and had contradictions which the CBI counsel rejected. The court has reserved its order for May 15.
