``Confucius`` kickstarts Chinese film festival

New Delhi, May 18 (PTI) ''Confucius'', a mega-budget biopic about the famous Chinese philosopher, kickstarted a six-day film festival celebrating 60 years of Sino-India relations. ''Confucius'', starring renowned Chinese star Chow Yun-Fat, showcases his rise from a commoner to a minister who tried to restore the authority of the court in 6th century BC when China was still a patchwork of feudal kingdoms and states vying for supremacy. And how after becoming a victim of political conspiracy, Confucius was forced to exile from his state and grow old as a wanderer travelling from kingdom to kingdom accompanied by an entourage of his loyal disciples. The festival that started yesterday and will go on till May 22, will also screen Chinese superstar Jackie Chan starrer ''Looking for Jackie'', ''The Road Home'', ''One Hundred Yuan'', ''Together'', ''Fit Lover'', ''You and Me'', ''The Law of Romance'' and ''Huayao Bride in Shangri-La''. "The focus of the festival is to show the ordinary life in China which in a way very similar to India. Both the countries share similar things like values and family bonding. We share a much closer bond," said Xie Fei, the Cultural Counselor of Chinese embassy. "The film festival has been organised to treat audience here with the best works in contemporary Chinese cinema. The aim is to let Indians know more about China and vice versa," Fei added. The festival will be travelling to Kolkata and Pune subsequently from May 28-June 16. In a similar initiative, a three city film fest showcasing Indian films will be held in China this June. The festival has been presented by the Directorate of Film Festivals, China State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the Chinese embassy in India. Also present at the event were VB Pyarelal, joint secretary (Films) in the information & broadcasting ministry and Chen Wang Xia, wife of the Chinese ambassador.
