Govt to explore ways to clean river Ganga

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, May 18 (PTI) As part of efforts to clean river Ganga, the government has invited Expression of Interest (EOIs) from global consultants to prepare a river management plan. "The Environment Ministry intends to hire reputed organisations or individuals for exploration of ways of bringing life back to the river. We have already received USD 2.96 million World Bank aid for comprehensive management plan preparation," a senior official said. He said mainstreaming of environmental flows into the Ganga river basin planning is vital for protecting health of the river, conserving its aquatic biodiversity, and supporting the human livelihoods and poverty reduction through sustainable use of water resources. The objective of this consultancy will be to compile the available knowledge on ecological flows for river Ganga, and to organize seminars for consultation with relevant experts and stakeholders for exploring possible ways of implementing ecological flows. "Environmental flow requirements have to be set by an informed decision of the society taking into consideration the trade-offs between the economic benefits and the impacts on ecosystem services of both upstream and downstream areas," the official said. The proposed study will also aim at evaluating the existing water quality management (WQM) practices for the river, identifying the gaps, and developing the design of an appropriate state-of-the-art WQM system.
