New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) A court here today deferred pronouncement of sentence against six Uttar Pradesh police personnel, including an SP, convicted for entering into criminal conspiracy to wrongfully confine family members of a man who married a girl against wishes of her family in 1994. Additional Sessions Judge Poonam Chaudhary adjourned the matter to June 4 as the counsels were not available to put forth the arguments. The court had on May 24 held A K Singh, Superintendent of Police, Satpal Singh, the then SHO, and Sukhpal Singh and Satbir Singh the then constables, guilty of criminal conspiracy for confining the family members of Atul Dhall. Two women police constables Duija Yadav and Promila J Masih were also convicted for their role in preparing fake arrest memo in order to produce fake evidence in the matter. The convicted police officers had on August 13, 1994 picked up businessman Raj Pal Dhall and his three relatives including a woman from their home and allegedly tortured them to extort "confessions". The police action came as a case was lodged with Kavi Nagar police station against Dhall''s son Atul who eloped with Geeta, a girl in the neighbourhood, from Ghaziabad and married her at a temple in Delhi on August 12, 1994. The case was transferred to CBI on an order of the Supreme Court on November 7, 1994. The trial against the accused police officers and the girl Geeta and her father Khem Raj Ahuja initially took place at Dehradun and later transferred to Delhi. The court, however, had acquitted Geeta, who joined with her family a day after her marriage, of all charges finding no evidence against her. Geeta''s father, also an accused, had died during the trial.
