Apart from being nominally priced, the package also saves patients from a lot of running around as the hospital takes care of all pre and post-operative tasksThe Surgery Package Project (SPP) initiated by the state government last year is drawing a huge response with masses who are willing to wait for even two months. The one-stop solution for all surgeries at the Sector-6 General Hospital, the package has patients from urban as well as the rural areas availing of the service. The project, which was launched in July last year, includes surgeries like orthopaedic, appendicitis, hernia, tumour, gall bladder which cost between Rs 500 to Rs 5000.Currently, there is a waiting list of around two months for laproscopic surgery of stone in gall bladder.Doctors claim that the method of removal of stone from gall bladder using laser technology is expensive in private hospitals as he explains the rush of patients for the SPP. Till now, doctors have performed over 150 such surgeries. "The entire operation costs Rs 5,000 for which nursing homes charge almost double the amount. Since it is cost effective, people are willing to wait," said Dr VK Bansal, medical superintendent. There are over 15 patients in the current list who have been given dates for late June and early July. The service is provided free of cost to BPL patients.Other surgeries such as hysterectomy, hernia, appendicitis are equally popular. While the charges for hysterectomy under the SPP is Rs 3,500, a surgery for hernia costs Rs 5,000. Private nursing homes charge anything between Rs 9,000 to 15,000 for these surgeries. In less than a year of its initiation, doctors have performed over 3,000 operations of various kinds under the SPP.Apart from being nominally priced, the package also saves patients and his relatives a lot of running around as it is the hospital that takes care of all pre and post-operative tasks."From investigating the case, getting the required tests done to providing medicines before and after the surgery, everything is done by us. Even facilities required for the surgery that are not available with us like MRI etc too is done by the hospital. Neither the patient nor his relatives are put to any inconvenience," said the medical superintendent.
