Man threatens self-immolationMangat Ram, an employee with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, created a ruckus near Division number four on Monday, when he threatened to immolate himself, if his demands were not met. Reportedly, Ram has demanded insurance cover for MC Class IV employees, jobs for wards of retired employees and permanent jobs for temporary workers. SHO Devinder Singh reached on the spot immediately and Mangat Ram from taking the drastic step. He was able to convince Ram to not commit suicide, which is a crime under the IPC.Three children go missingThree children, Majid (7), Taufiq (7) and Raju (9) have been missing from the Jodhewal area since May 7. The Jodhewal Police has registered a case of kidnapping on the complaint of Mohammad Sajid, father of Majid. Sajid, a resident of Vardhman Nagar Rahon Road, complained that his son and his friends were playing at an empty plot near the local Gurdawara on May 7. After that, they did not return. The police have no clue in this regard so far. Sub-inspector Surinder Singh is investigating the matter.RS School gets Rs 2 lakh grant from MPLudhiana MP Manish Tewari gave a grant of Rs 2 lakh to RS Model School in Shastri Nagar for its outstanding performance. The school has been adjudged best in Punjab by the Punjab School Education Board. The cheque was presented to the managing committee members led by the acting president Rajinder Pal Syal, Principal Mohan Lal Kalra and members Jagjit Bassi, Parshotam Mahajan, Rakesh Sood, Mangat Ram Mehta, Pawan Dewan, Sudhir Syal and Sushil Malhotra.Last date for applying for PAU journalism course is May 12The last date for submitting application forms without late fee for admission to Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) at Punjab Agricultural University is May 12, 2010. These forms can be submitted with a late fee of Rs 1000 till May 19, 2010. This programme has five seats which will be filled through entrance test to be held on June 11, 2010. A candidate who is a graduate in any stream with OCPA of 6.00 (out of 10.0) or 60% marks or holds a second class master's degree or second class graduate with diploma in journalism can apply, he added.He added said the university also runs a post graduate diploma in agricultural journalism and mass communication (PGDAJMC) which has 10 seats. The last date for submission of forms without late fee for this is June 18, 2010. The counseling for PGDAJMC will be held at 2 pm on 2 July in Pal Auditorium of the university.Members from Konkan varsity in cityA group of four members of the Executive Council of Dr B S Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (KKV), Dapoli, Maharashtra, visited Punjab Agricultural University today and had an interactive meeting with Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang. Others who joined the interactive meeting included Dr R K Mahey, Registrar, Dr P P S Lubana, Director Students Welfare and Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director of Communication, PAU.Swimming pool opens at farm varsityThe PAU opened its swimming pool on Monday. Director Students Welfare Dr P P S Lubana said the swimming pool timings will be 6 am to 7 am and 5 pm to 6 pm for NSO/trainees, 7 am to 8 am. for ladies, 4 pm to 5 pm for families, 6 pm to 7 pm for men. He said that the charges for the swimming pool have been revised which can be obtained from his office on any working day.Advertising committee holds meetingAnother meeting of advertising committee was held today to sort out the matter of illegal unipoles in the city. Although the members could not arrive at any conclusion, sources revealed that the contractor has been told to remove a few unipoles from the Sarabha Nagar market. Information revealed that Sarabha Nagar has been included in the contract agreement of the company but the same was not presented before the finance and contract committee (FCC). Sources revealed that members have not yet been able to sort out this controversy but it indicates the involvement of the MC officials in tampering with the agreement.Training course on organic farming at PAUA training on organic farming is being organised by the Directorate of Extension Education and Department of Agronomy at PAU on May 13. Giving details, Director of Extension Education Dr M S Gill said in the training various aspects such as research on organic farming, need for organic farming, nutritional aspects, weed management, appropriate crop cycles, pest and disease management will be covered by PAU experts. In addition the role of Organic Farming Council of Punjab and the farmers experiences will be discussed.
