An Ex-Serviceman caught with an alleged stolen car near Kharar on Sunday is believed to have been involved in several other cases of thefts and forgery. The district police have so far traced at least three more cases of theft which the police claim were his handiwork.Sunil Sharma, a native of Paschim Vihar in Delhi, was presently putting up in a rented accommodation in Phase VII, Mohali, and was driving towards Ludhiana when the district police intercepted him at a check-post in Gharuan village. The police claimed that the car was allegedly stolen and after allegedly putting a fake registration number, Sharma was going to sell it off in Ludhiana. A fake registration certificate, insurance cover and a stolen laptop was also recovered from the car, the police claimed.During his sustained interrogation, the police came to know that Sharma was recruited in the Army as Lieutenant in 1981-82 and had left the job as Captain after five years. "Sometime back, he came to Mohali and lived on rent while committing thefts at houses and stealing vehicles, which he used to sell after preparing forged papers," claimed police officials, while stating that he had also allegedly stolen cheque books of some of his landlords and had allegedly withdrawn money from their bank accounts after forging their signatures. The police further claimed to have recovered another white car from him, which he had allegedly stolen and was using by putting a fake registration number of Gujarat. "He had also stolen a LCD TV from the room where he earlier stayed with some other acquaintances," the cops said. The police have also recovered an identity card, which it claimed Sharma had allegedly stolen from the house of a Colonel and was using it by affixing his own photograph on it.After procuring his police remand till tomorrow, the police hope to crack more cases of thefts and forgery from his custodial interrogation.
