A 44-year-old zari unit owner, Vazhul Kamar Khan, was arrested by the Thane unit of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday for his alleged role in three blasts which took place in the city between 2002 and 2003 in which 13 persons were killed.Khan, absconding since May 2003, was among the seven accused who have been evading arrest for their role in the blasts and is now the seventeenth accused in the 2002-2003 case to be charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002.In the chargesheet, Saquib Nachchan or the "potassium cyanide guru" is identified as the prime accused and mastermind behind the blasts and also as the man who arranged the logistics for both the explosives.A native of Siddharth Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Khan was based in Kurla, Pipe Road, where he did his schooling and also lived till 2002.Initial interrogation has revealed that Khan first got introduced to SIMI member Noor Mohammed Ansari from Kurla in 2000 when the plot for the terror blasts was allegedly being hatched in Padga and Mumbra. Ansari, who underwent training in Pakistan on handling equipment, then introduced Khan to the rest of the group.ATS chief Rakesh Maria also confirmed that Khan was a close associate of Saquib Nachchan and also "knows Iqbal Bhatkal, co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen"."His role is significant as he was involved in the criminal conspiracy behind all the three blasts," said Maria.
