Germany's interior minister has rejected calls for a ban on a full Islamic face veil in public, days after Belgium's parliament voted in favour of one, a German newspaper reported on Tuesday.Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told the Leipziger Volkszeitung daily that talk of a ban in Germany was "inappropriate and therefore unnecessary", according to an excerpt from a video interview due to be published on Wednesday.De Maiziere is a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), who rule in coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).A senior lawmaker of the FDP in the European parliament voiced support for a ban at the weekend.Belgium's lower house of parliament on Thursday approved a bill to ban wearing the full veil in public.France, which has the largest Muslim population in Europe, is also looking towards a ban on wearing Islamic veils in public, with the government set to examine a draft bill in May.Germany is home to more than four million Muslims, and will hold an "Islam Conference" on May 17 with the aim of fostering understanding of the religion in the country. The northern Italian city of Novara, governed by the far-right Northern League, has fined a Tunisian-born Muslim woman 500 euros for wearing a full face veil at a post office.Novara was the first of several northern cities that have recently passed municipal bans against burqas and niqabs to apply the fine, the League's newspaper La Padania said."Applying this ordinance is the only means at our disposal to deal with behaviours that complicate the already difficult process of integration," Novara Mayor Massimo Giordano said after the Tunisian woman was fined.(Additional reporting by Tom Heneghan)(Writing by Dave Graham)
