The Delhi government has decided to expedite work on the East-West Corridor to prevent trucks from entering the city during the Games. Newsline had reported that to check air pollution the government is working on levying a congestion charge on trucks entering Delhi after the corridor becomes operational.Concerned about the poor quality of air in the city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday chaired a high-profile meeting with senior officials including the Principal Secretary to CM, Principal Secretary of PWD, Commissioner (MCD), Chairperson (NDMC), Special Advisor Commonwealth Games, Principal Secretary (Home) and environmental expert Bhure Lal.During the Games, the government is also likely to put restrictions on vehicles that come to Delhi from the NCR. The government is also considering hiking parking rates as a disincentive — a suggestion earlier made by the special task force on traffic headed by the Chief Secretary. An official statement released on Saturday said Delhi will ask Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to enforce pollution control mechanisms in their states. It is also considering shutting down the 135 MW Rajghat thermal station, following the Pragati station which has been shut already.
