New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Mango exports from India, the world''s largest producer of the fruit, is likely to rise 8.5 per cent to over 90,000 tonne in the 2009-10 season on increased demand from the Middle East, an agri-export promotion body APEDA said today. "We expect overseas sales of mangoes to cross 90,000 tonne in 2010-11 season, driven by higher demand in the Middle East," a senior official with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said. India''s mango exports are under a per cent of the country''s total production of 12.5 million tonnes. Last year, the country is estimated to have shipped 83,000 tonne of mangoes, including to the Middle East, the US and the UK, he said. Mango season runs from March to July. India exports Alfonso mangoes, shipments for which began from March end, and other varieties such as Kesar, Began Palli, Mallika, and Chausa from states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. "We were expecting huge shipments of Began Palli mangoes from Andhra Pradesh but fruit drop due to untimely rains reduced the crop by 20 per cent," the official said, adding that APEDA is taking steps to promote Dussheri mangoes this year. "We see good market for Dussheri mangoes (grown in Uttar Pradesh) as the fruit has got the Geographical Indication (GI) status. Ahead of the arrival of Dussheri next week, we are holding a meeting with UP exporters and orchard owners to check the fruit quality and fix logistic problems," he said. As export of the fruit by air is expensive, the agri-export promoting body is trying since last year to check if mangoes can be shipped safely through sea as it will help exporters earn better margins. APEDA is planning to ship 72 tonnes of mangoes next week via the sea route on a trial basis, he added.
