Bangalore, May 9 (IANS) Former Karnataka minister Haratalu Halappa Sunday surrendered to the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) and was arrested in a rape case filed against him by the wife of his friend, police said.'Halappa reported at the office of the district superintendent of police at 2.30 p.m. for deposition in response to our notice served at his residence in his absence May 6. He is in our custody for interrogation in the various criminal cases registered against him May 3,' a police officer told IANS from Shimoga, 270 km from here, on condition of anonymity.'We have quizzed Halappa on the various charges levelled against him, including rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation. After recording his statements, he has been told that he is under arrest,' the official said.Halappa, 49, resigned May 2 as food and civil supplies minister after he was accused of raping Chandravathi, the wife of his friend Venkatesh Murthy at Shimoga on the night of Nov 26-27, 2009.After four hours of interrogation, Halappa was taken to a hospital for a medical check-up.He has applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions' court that has been posted for hearing Monday.Halappa's lawyers are trying to secure bail for him by producing him before a local magistrate. But the police said the accused may have to spend the night in the CID's custody as he was facing a non-bailable offence and the magistrate was not empowered to grant bail.Halappa remained 'missing' since May 4 after Murthy and his wife filed the complaint with Shimoga Superintendent of Police S. Murgan May 3.
