Nepal: Maoists attack scribes, PM not to quit

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

A day after Maoist chief Prachanda blamed the media and intelligentsia of working against a strike launched by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (UCPN-M), his supporters attacked journalists for writing against the protest. At least half a dozen journalists sustained injuries during clashes and two are said to be in critical condition.Thousands of Maoist cadres assembled outside Singha Durbar where most ministries are located and targeted journalists, mainly photographers, who were there to cover the event. "Do not leave vigilantes, they are the ones spying for the government," yelled cadres. The blows exchanged and the lathi charge that followed left half a dozen injured, officials and eyewitnesses said. The Singha Durbar gherao is part of the protest programme of the Maoists to put pressure on Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to quit and pave the way for the succession of Prachanda. But Nepal firmly refused to accept such a suggestion when a delegation of the Federation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), led by its chairman Kush Kumar Joshi, asked the Prime Minister to resign and create an atmosphere conducive for national consensus."I will quit the moment Maoist combatants vacate cantonments and the Young Communist League is transformed into a civilian set up," he said, while asking those running businesses and industries not to give donation to the Maoists. "Please mind that giving them money is like feeding milk to snakes." The Prime Minister continues to get the support of coalition partners. Representatives of 10 parties who had assembled at the party headquarters of the Maoists refused to sign a statement demanding the dissolution of the government. The police used more than a dozen rounds of tear gas shells when the Maoists turned unruly and cadres blocked the entry to the main secretariat building. Prachanda had on Saturday called off the Maoist strike on its sixth day in the face of widespread defiance by the Nepali public and calls for a peaceful resolution of problems from the international community.
