No more farm loan waivers: Pawar

Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar has told farmers and cooperatives to not expect any more loan waivers. He also said the Food Security Act guaranteeing a prescribed quantity of affordable foodgrains, would be in place within a year.Speaking at the golden jubilee function of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Marketing Federation, he said government loan waivers, including the Rs 65,000-crore waiver, had adversely affected credit system and sent a wrong signal that there was no need to repay loans.He said the government was making all efforts to address problems of farmers and cooperative institutions but there was a tendency of not repaying loans and waiting for another waiver. "Don't ask for loan waivers in future," he said, adding people should cultivate the habit of repaying loans.He said the government would provide the prescribed quantity of foodgrains at subsidised rates under the Food Security Act and if the government fails to do so, it would pay compensation. Referring to the cooperative sector, he said laws would be amended to give more powers to members. He said the government was committed to protecting interests of farmers and consumers.Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the federation Ankushrao Tope said Nabcons (an agency of NABARD) had been entrusted with the work of drawing a roadmap for the federation for the next ten years.
