Pulse shortage stands at four million

Palampur, May 16 (PTI) There is a shortage of about four million tonnes of pulses this year and Rs 1,696 crore will be allocated to boost production in the next two years, an official said today. A sum of Rs 1,696 crore would be spent during next two years to boost production of pluses and overcome the shortage which had led to sharp rise in prices, Patil, Assistant Director General (Oilseeds and Pulses) of Indian Council of Agriculture Research said. During the annual group meeting of All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Khariff pulses, he said there was a shortage of four million tonnes of pulses this year. 6,000 demonstration plots were proposed to be set up in the country this year to help farmers learn new technologies and new varieties of pulses with higher yield, he said.
