Vadodara will be among the cleanest cities in India: VMC

Recently released urban development survey report has placed the city on 232nd spotWith Vadodara finding itself in the 232nd spot in the Urban Development Ministry's survey ranking the cities in terms of civic amenities, the city's image has taken a beating. The never-ending digging work, overflowing garbage containers and stray cattle on the main roads of the city have earned the Sanskari Nagari of the state the 232nd place in the survey. The survey of 423 cities covered 72 per cent of the urban population and each city was assessed on 19 indicators. While the pressure groups claim success, those who are at the helm of affairs at the civic body and other key posts claimed that Vadodara would be in at least the top 20 cities in the next survey as several development works have taken place after the survey was conducted in 2007.Some of the industry representatives, however, admitted that the industries have failed to mount pressure on the concerned government agencies to improve the image of the city."I would not hesitate to say that industries have not been as aggressive as they should have been. It is a situation where there is no opposition from within the civic body and there is no opposition from outside, from the pressure groups, and that has kept Vadodara the city as it was," said K S Chhabra, Chairman (Media Relations), Federation of Gujarat Industries. He added: "My views would certainly not be appreciated by industry people, but that is still the truth. Now the time has come to take a positive stance by the industrialists. If Vadodara wants to become a genuine hub for industrial activities, it will have to bring in changes at the roots."First, it was the Vadodara Initiative, an independent forum including people from industries and other organisations, which was formed to make the city clean.A Task Force was formed by the district collector last year to make the city cattle-free. But the concept fizzled out.One more pressure group was formed by the Baroda Management Association and was named the CEO Forum."In one year, we have taken up road development work starting from the airport to Akshar Chowk. Other works would be taken up in a phased manner," said K R Rohadia, an active member of the CEO Forum.Vadodara Municipal Commissioner Manoj Kumar Das, however, is positive about the development in the city."The survey on cleanliness was carried out in 2007 and at that time a lot of development works were going on and that is why we could not score well," Das said.He added: "However, I would not be surprised if the city figures among the top 10 cities in the same survey next time. This is because we have actually invested heavily on the development works. These include roads, sewage, slum relocation and drinking water supply."
