The state government has prepared a Rs 348-crore plan to change the agricultural practices of tribals in a bid to increase their income. The plan under the Centrally-funded Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) will involve seed agencies and NGOs. The project is being implemented by the Development Support Agency (DSA) under the government's Tribal Development Department. The project will cover over 1.94 lakh farmers in Dahod, Panchmahals, Tapi, Dangs, Valsad, Vadodara, Navsari, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha districts, and envisages cultivation of cash crops like Bt cotton, pigeon pea (tuvar) and mustard. Besides, it will also cover another 30,000 tribal farmers, who will be encouraged to grow fruits like mangoes and bananas, and vegetables like potatoes, bottle-gourd and bitter-gourd.The project will be implemented within four years. Under it, every tribal farmer will be provided with an incentive of Rs 2,000 to buy seeds, fertilisers and other inputs. The seed companies will provide demonstration and extend services like soil testing to the farmers, and suggest them the types of crops they should grow, depending on the quality of their soil. The role of NGOs will be limited to motivating the farmers to switch over to high-tech farming.Monsanto, Shriram Biotech and Nisha are among the seed companies taking part in the project implementation, while DSA is looking for NGOs with a good network and the villages and with adequate experience of dealing with the tribals.Manish Kumar Sharma of DAS, who is the team leader of the project, told The Indian Express that the project was expected to double the income of the tribals. He added: "The farmers won't immediately agree to adoption of new technology due to lack of awareness. Besides, the tribals have little interaction with the outside world, and NGOs working among them are being involved to motivate them."
