Differently-abled girls aspire to form cricket team

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Screams of Howzaat! are not heard when these young girls take the field. But they are learning their cricket well — well enough to teach each other the nuances of the game in their sign language; and rightly so, for they aspire to form the first differently-abled girls cricket team.It is also for the first time that these 34 girls from the Deaf and Mute Girls schools in Kachholi and Palanpur — all aged between 12 and 16 — are swinging a real cricket bat and playing on a field.Coach Nitendra Singh, who has also coached the differently-abled boys' cricket team, said: "Initially there was complete chaos when they were asked to arrange themselves on the field. Everyone would wildly gesture at each other without understanding anyone. But in just five days, they could understand what short third man, long leg, short leg, front foot blocking and other terminology meant."Incidentally, most of the girls are from the slums or the tribal areas and this 20-day training is opening up a new world for them. Suman Chaudhary from Palanpur, said: "I have never played cricket before. Now, I love to bat."Singh said: "At the end of the training, I intend to play them against the girls and boys' teams."He added that they now plan to assemble a differently-abled girls' team at the national level. "I aim to do it in the next three years so that the country has its own team. There is a lot of potential among the differently-abled, which is being wasted. I have some of the best cricketers in my boys' team, but even after repeated requests, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has refused to accommodate them citing communication problem with the other players."Cavatina Patel, Manager of women's cricket team, BCA said, "There is no women's team of deaf and mute. If there can be one for deaf and mute boys, mentally retarded and differently-abled, then why not one for these girls."
