New Delhi, June 18 -- The Special Cell's investigation into the Mukhtar Ansari case may suffer after some important files pertaining to the 'mafia don's' criminal cases went missing from an Uttar Pradesh (UP) court a few days ago. Ansari has been booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. Ansari, wanted in 35 criminal cases, was brought to Delhi in May, after his name cropped up during the interrogation of his henchman and close aide Munna Bajrangi, who was arrested in November 2009 from Mumbai. Ansari would not be able to come out of jail, at least for six months, under the strict provisions of MCOCA. "We had collected relevant FIRs and documents from Uttar Pradesh. During the course of investigation, we might need more documents and we fear the papers that have gone missing may be vital to our investigations," said a senior police officer requesting anonymity. "The accused, who has considerable clout in Uttar Pradesh, was trying to set up base in Delhi. It was at the behest of Ansari that his henchman Bajrangi had made threat calls to a Delhi-based businessman," said the officer. The Special Cell is investigating this case and slapped MCOCA after considerable evidence was found against him. Ansari, described by the police as a 'mafia don' controlled tenders in sectors like coal mining, railway construction, scrap disposal, Public Works construction and illicit liquor business. Police said it was a huge task getting the records of all the properties bought through the extortion money. Presently, Ansari is lodged in the high security ward of Tihar Prisons. "He claims there is a threat to his life. So, we have kept him in the high security ward and keep a close watch on his movements," said a senior jail official.Ansari was recently shifted out from Ghazipur jail to Mathura jail after objectionable items, including an LPG cylinder, a gas stove and a cooler were recovered from his cell during a raid.
