New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) With the objective of preserving India''s rich heritage in textile and its lost traditions, INTACH opened its first textile conservation unit here today. The Specialised Textile Conservation Unit (STCU), as it is called, will work to promote awareness on textile heritage through conservation and preservation projects, workshops, seminars, publications and exhibitions. The unit was inaugurated by Maj Gen (Retd) L K Gupta, Chairman, Indian National Trust for Art and Heritage, who hoped that it will play a key role in popularising textile appreciation and preservation. "This will further help in research, documentation, conservation and development of our lost traditions," Gupta said. The STCU is a specialised conservation studio that works for government and semi-government organisations, private owners, museums and art galleries, INTACH said in a statement. It is concerned with the conservation and preservation of India''s rich textile heritage. The unit will operate from the Delhi centre of the Indian Council for Conservation Institutes (ICCI) that constitutes the Material Heritage Division of INTACH and is responsible for the conservation of works of art.
